Shopping for the little more unusual

Taiwan today is well-known for having the best computer goods in the market, and many tourists and businessmen alike do purchase them here for a lower price than in their home country. Computer goods are still the most common item to bring home from Taiwan and the place to look for computers in Taipei is : the Guang Hua Digital Plaza, Civic Blvd., near the intersection with Xin Sheng Rd. Shops there open from 9 am to 10 pm. On weekends, many shops are not open before 11 am. Be advised, however, that English is rarely spoken and care must be taken as the system may not be compatible globally. Make sure to get an English version of the instruction manual.

Another popular item to bring home from Taiwan is cameras. The "camera street" is at Han Kou Street, Sec. 1, close to Taipei Main Station. The same opening hours as the computer shops and the same advice apply.

For the more daring shopper : check out the Wugu furniture boulevard (Wugu Industrial Park, Wugong Rd.)! The venues are open from 10 am to 10 pm. Wugu is a small city just south of Taipei where you can find all kind of handmade furniture and made to order pieces. The skills of the woodcarver and the designer are excellent. Everything in wood is found here, whether it's for the garden, your home or your office. Handcarved items, like big Buddhas or tables can also be purchased here. And not to worry, shipping to your home country will be arranged. Smaller items are also available.

Once again English can be a problem, so better bring a friend to help you who is also familiar with bargaining for the best price.
